STAC Lifetime Achievement Award
Leo Helmer
After nearly four decades of service to Canada’s tower and antenna industry, Leo Helmer retires with a legacy that has helped shape the sector’s safety standards, culture, and evolution.
Leo concluded his 38-year career with WesTower Communications Ltd. as Vice President of Operational Excellence in December 2025. Throughout his career, he was a trusted leader known for his practical expertise, steady guidance, and ability to navigate the complexities of an ever-changing industry.
One of Leo’s most significant contributions came in the early 1990s, when he identified a critical gap in safety equipment for tower workers. By working directly with manufacturers, he helped drive the development of personal protective equipment designed specifically for the unique risks of tower climbing—an innovation that transformed industry safety practices and helped enable the widespread adoption of 100% fall protection systems.
From 2020 to 2024, Leo served as STAC Co-Chair, leading the organization through a period of growth and increased collaboration. His leadership reflected a deep commitment to safety, professionalism, and continuous improvement across the industry.
Beyond his professional accomplishments, Leo is widely recognized for his character, generosity, and passion for helping others. His deep knowledge, creative problem-solving, and unmistakable sense of humour made him a valued mentor, colleague, and friend to many.
In recognition of his extraordinary contributions and lasting impact, STAC is proud to present Leo with the 2026 Lifetime Achievement Award.
The STAC Lifetime Achievement Award is provided to an individual in recognition of an abundance of acts or activities that have helped improve Canadian tower safety outcomes over an extended period of time.
