It is with profound sadness and a heavy heart that we confirm the passing of one of the two workers injured as a result of a tower incident in Candiac, QC on Aug. 16.
Maxime Asselin passed away on Aug. 26 as a result of injuries suffered during the incident. STAC has confirmed that the other injured worker, Gabriel Otis, is in a stable and “encouraging” state, but remains in hospital.
Everyone at STAC is mourning the news of Mr. Asselin’s death and we send our deepest condolences to his family and colleagues. We are also keeping Mr. Otis in our thoughts as he begins his long recovery process.
We are encouraging STAC members to please consider donating to the respective Go Fund Me campaigns for each of the tower workers, via the following links:
While news media have reported that the provincial agency CNESST is investigating this incident, STAC has confirmed that federal investigators from ESDC’s Labour Program are now responsible for the investigation of root causes. STAC is not currently aware of any concerns relating to the tower infrastructure that may have played a role, and has not been informed of any urgent safety information that should be shared with the Canadian tower industry.
STAC will provide additional updates about this incident as we learn new information. If you have any questions or would like to talk to someone further about this incident, please contact firstname.lastname@example.org
Note: This post was updated to reflect that ESDC has taken over the investigation.
