Freedom opening in Eastern Ontario markets

Shaw Communications Inc.’s mobile division is expanding to some Eastern Ontario markets as it continues deploying its low-band spectrum.

Freedom Mobile announced Friday that it has opened its network to residents of Cobourg, Trenton, Belleville, Brockville, Cornwall and Pembroke, who can choose a limited-time introductory offer of 10 GB data plan with unlimited Canada-wide talk and text. Its 10 GB plans are known as “Big Gig.”

The move fulfills part of a company commitment to expand to 1.3 million more people in British Columbia, Alberta and Ontario this year. It began deploying its 700 MHz spectrum in Calgary in October last year, which was expected to be gradually rolled out in parts of the Greater Toronto Area and southern Ontario.

The company, which has focused its marketing efforts in part on eliminating data overage fees, began giving subscribers a one-time additional 100 GB of data on top of select plans before this past holiday season.
