Police say two men were found dead early Thursday inside a small building at the base of a cellphone tower on Firestone Road, shot multiple times.

Two men are dead following an overnight shooting the 6800 block of Firestone Road, the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office said.

And police said their bodies were found early Thursday inside a small building that is part of an AT&T cell tower just north of More Avenue and west of Interstate 295.

The two victims were subcontractors doing electrical work inside the building, police confirmed.

“It’s definitely going to be foul play,” Sgt. Steve Rudlaff said. “Both individuals have been shot. It does not appear that it was combat against each other. We don’t know if this was a possible robbery or what.”

Officers were called out to the Westside site just after a 6 a.m. 911 call reported two men lying unresponsive at the facility, Rudlaff said. They walked into a small building next to the cellphone tower and found two men who had been shot multiple times, Rudlafff said. The men, ages 35 and 37, were declared dead by Jacksonville Fire and Rescue Department paramedics, the Sheriff’s Office said.

Investigators are working with the telephone company to identify the dead men and determine when they arrived at the tower to work, Rudlaff said. They are also looking for security video that could help, Rudlaff said.

AT&T expressed their condolences for the men in a brief statement, saying this was “a terrible tragedy and our thoughts go out their family, friends and colleagues” as they work with the Sheriff’s Office on its investigation.

Anyone with information on the shooting can contact the Sheriff’s Office at (904) 630-0500 or leave an anonymous tip and be eligible for a possible reward by calling First Coast Crime Stoppers at (866) 845-8477 (TIPS).
